Turning waste into treasure East German hydrogen energy helps the steel industry produce hydrogen from coke oven gas

As the world’s largest steel producer and consumer, it is imperative for China to achieve green development of the steel industry.

The coke oven gas hydrogen co-production LNG project can “turn coke oven gas into treasure” and achieve high value-added utilization by separating and purifying coke oven gas from by-products of iron and steel enterprises to produce high-purity hydrogen and LNG, which is in line with the concept of circular economy.

Industry reports show that coke oven gas hydrogen production has reduced carbon emissions by more than 88% and 95% respectively compared with traditional natural gas hydrogen production and coal hydrogen production.

East Germany hydrogen energy practice: CIMC Ansteel and Linyi Iron and Steel invest in coke oven gas to produce hydrogen

In this wave of blue hydrogen energy, Yantai Dongde Hydrogen Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Dongde Hydrogen Energy”) has deeply participated in projects such as Angang CIMC’s first coke oven gas co-production LNG project and Linyi Iron and Steel Investment Hydrogen Energy Industry Base Project, setting an innovative benchmark for the green and sustainable development of the steel industry and hydrogen filling.

 

CIMC Ansteel Coke Oven Gas Hydrogen Co-production LNG: annual output of 15,000 tons of hydrogen

The “Coke Oven Gas Hydrogen Cogeneration LNG” project, jointly invested and constructed by CIMC Enric and Ansteel, was officially put into operation in September 2024, with an annual production capacity of 15,000 tons of hydrogen based on Ansteel’s abundant coke oven gas resources.

Dongde Hydrogen Energy matched 4 sets of DZ22-1000 diaphragm compressor units for the project, which were used for hydrogen compression and filling produced by coke oven gas produced by Angang Zhongmu coke oven, with an inlet pressure of 1.6MPa, an exhaust pressure of 22MPa, a total flow rate of 4000Nm³/h, and a comprehensive energy consumption of 6.35Nm³/Kw. The East German hydrogen diaphragm compressor unit ensures the stable compression and transportation of gas during the coke oven gas separation and purification process, and provides reliable power support for the automated production process of the entire project.

It is reported that the project covers a total area of 115,000 square meters, with a total investment of about 638 million yuan, and the hydrogen produced is mainly used for hydrogen smelting, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, etc., LNG can replace diesel and industrial coal, meet the demand of steel mills and surrounding customers for hydrogen, LNG and other clean energy, and reduce emissions by 470,000 tons of carbon dioxide, 174 tons of sulfur dioxide, and 1,344 tons of nitrogen oxides per year.

Linyi Steel Coke Oven Gas Hydrogen Production: Green and Efficient Hydrogen Energy Industry Model

The Linyi Iron and Steel Investment Hydrogen Energy Industry Base project is located in Lingang Economic Development Zone and is the first demonstration project in Linyi to promote the development of hydrogen energy. As the EPC general contractor of the project, East German Hydrogen Energy undertook the EPC construction of the first and second phases of the Linyi Steel Investment Coke Oven Coal Purification and Hydrogen Production Industrial Base. The project officially started in June 2023 and took two years to build a green, energy-saving, smart and efficient modern hydrogen energy industrial base integrating hydrogen production, hydrogen refueling and hydrogen use.

In the Linyi Steel Coke Oven Coal Purification and Hydrogen Production Project, Dongde Hydrogen Energy also provided 8 sets of self-developed diaphragm compressor units, with an inlet pressure of 1.7MPaG, an exhaust pressure of 22MPaG, a flow rate of 1000Nm³/h, and a rear end equipped with a filling column with a filling capacity of 8000Nm³/h, which is the largest hydrogen energy industry gathering place in Linyi City.

The successful implementation of the project has helped Linyi Iron and Steel Investment Hydrogen Energy Industry Base build an integrated industrial chain of “steel-coke-chemical-hydrogen” with resource sharing and complementary products, which cleverly utilizes the by-product coke oven gas generated by the upstream 1.16 million tons of coal retort treatment and comprehensive utilization project, and makes full use of the complementary energy characteristics in the region. Through a series of processes, including compression, purification, decarburization and cryogenic separation, the project was able to produce LNG/CNG products. At the same time, the hydrogen-rich gas generated during the cryogenic separation process will be sent to the PSA hydrogen extraction unit to produce industrial hydrogen products and high-purity hydrogen products.

The construction of the Linyi Steel Investment Hydrogen Energy Industry Base project not only means that the Lingang Chemical Park will receive strong hydrogen and steam supply support, but also indicates the upgrading and development of the region’s industrial system. The commissioning of this base will provide stable energy security for many enterprises and promote the continuous prosperity of Lingang Chemical Park.
